Christopher Benvie (1919-1995) is best known for his landscapes and seascapes of New England Americana. Due to his application of paint with a strong textural quality of the palette knife and the elegant, pastel colors of the Impressionists’ palette, Chris Benvie has been considered one of the great Rhode Island Impressionist painters. Mr. Benvie attended Rhode Island School of Design and studied under such nationally known artists as Robert Brackman, NA., Elmer Browne, NA., and Stanley Woodward. Mr. Benvie was himself an instructor of students in oil paintings for many years of his life.
Mr. Benvie had three one-man shows at Providence Art Club, Providence, Rhode Island as well as exhibitions of oil and watercolor
paintings in Boston, Massachusetts and other areas throughout New England. The artist exhibited at such locations as Mystic Art Association, Mystic Connecticut, North Shore Arts Association, Gloucester, Massachusetts and Rockport Art Association, Rockport, Massachusetts. Christopher Benvie was an avid exhibitor throughout his lifetime. Paintings and prints of his work can still be viewed and purchased at prestigious galleries. New York’s Graphics Society also represents his work.
