...Creating and sharing for four generations...
The tradition began with George Benvie (1878-1959), a wood carver and sketch artist. His carvings can be seen at Church of the Ascension, Cranston, Rhode Island. There are but a few examples of his work remaining but the influence of this creativity and artistic ambition continued with his son, Chris.
Chris Benvie (1919-1995) was a prolific oil painter and a noted New England Impressionist. His paintings, primarily oils, are scenes of New England in an impressionistic palette and style. Preferring to apply his paint with a palette knife, his paintings have a thick, textural quality. Chris Benvie exhibited at such locations as Mystic Art Association, North Shore Arts Association, Rockport Art Association and Providence Art Club. His work is represented by New York's Graphic Society.

People said his daughter, Alice, inherited her father’s talent but what she inherited was the drive he had for the creative process. Alice Benvie Gebhart, gallery owner and glass artist, works in the gallery’s studio. Although Alice began as an oil painter like her father, she now works exclusively with kiln formed fused glass. She creates a wide variety of functional pieces and is noted for her unique layered glass landscape panels. A trained art educator, Alice teaches fused glass at the gallery as well as select locations nationally. She is a member of the Providence Art Club, Glass Art Society, American Craft Council and Attleboro Arts Museum. Her work can be found at the gallery. Visit her website for further information and opportunities to view her work and view her teaching schedule.
Alice's son Nick, shares the artistic gene. Nick Gebhart is a fourth generation artist. He carries on the family heritage as an oil painter. Even though he comes from a family of artists, his work is strictly his own. His paintings are a realistic portrayal of portrait and figure in contemporary venues. Nick has his MFA in painting from New York Academy of Art in New York City and currently lives and works as a professional artist in Brooklyn, NY. Selected works can be seen at the gallery and commission work is also available.
